1977 - Tamil Movie Review  [Monday, March 9, 2009]

1977 ….. Made in 1977?

-C. Karthik

Starring: Sarath Kumar, Namitha, Farzana
Direction: Dinesh Kumar
Music: Vidyasagar
Production: RSK Pictures

These are testing times for Tamil Cinema. Just when you think that Kollywood has a bunch of talented directors who can deliver some decent hits, here comes another dud from RSK Pictures. 1977, directed by Dinesh Kumar offers nothing new to the movie-goer. This was dubbed as Sarath Kumar’s biggest action flick thus far but it has proved to be his most disastrous film so far.

Sarath Kumar in a father-son combination is not new to Tamil cinema. He has had some box office success in the past but fails big time with this one. 1977 tells the story of a son who is out to find the truth about his father’s life and the reason behind his death (sounds familiar?).

The movie begins in a peaceful coastal village where Sarath Kumar (senior) is a sort of father figure. His son, Sarath Kumar (junior) is an acclaimed scientist and has just won a National Award. His father’s sudden death makes him suspicious and his quest to find the secrets behind what is in the paper takes him to Malaysia where he discovers a disturbing truth about his father’s life. How he sets about correcting all the wrongs that happened in one horrible incident in 1977 is the rest of the story.

Why Malaysia? Only the director knows. Or maybe the producer wanted to spend a lot of his money to evade tax. We have seen a million movies of this kind and heaven knows why our directors still stick to the same old formula time and again. Is there such a dearth of good stories in Tamil cinema? There is absolutely nothing in the movie which is worth mentioning. Its inevitable you get a feeling of “Oh no…not again” in every scene of the movie.

The director, Dinesh Kumar, should take all the “credit” for this blooper. What could have been a decent mystery story has been disastrously spoiled into a non-starter. It is very clear that he had no clear thought on how this movie could be delivered on screen. The screenplay is amateurish and does not even have a faintest relation to a word called “logic”. Sample this. Sarath Kumar (Senior), after being shot on his shoulder, gets home to India from Malaysia on a fishing boat with oars.

Sarath Kumar, tries his best to look young at his age and succeeds too. It is very clear that the director has relied heavily on Sarath and he does a good job too. But we are tired seeing him romancing two heroines in a movie are’nt we? Since this is an action movie he has had to punch a lot of guys and escape a lot of bullets. He flies in the air, jumps from trains and bridges, hacks into computers and even after fighting 500 men and escaping 50,000 bullets, he still does not even have a scar on his body. Superhero?
Farzana and Namitha have nothing to do in the movie. At all. Looks as if the director has shot a song and dialogue sequence whenever these two went shopping to Malaysia or they must have had an extended holiday at the expense of the director. Why is it that the heroines should only be glam dolls in action movies? Farzana is a news reporter but wears mini skirts and spends days and nights with Sarath. As for Namitha, a leading lawyer in Malaysia, she wears a bikini, shows cleavage, romances, runs and dives with Sarath. She is not half as glamorous as she thinks. Time to cut some flab Nam.

Vivek’s comedy is as boring as the movie. Think he needs a break for a year or two to regain his old form. Radharavi and Vijaykumar have been wasted in miniscule roles.

Cinematography is very ordinary and has done what the director has told him to do so. Editing makes no difference to the movie. Music? Vidhyasagar can do some stage shows from now on. None of the songs fail to make the slightest impact. BGM is worse than the songs.

Box office success? Forget it. You will have to wait little more to give your long awaited hit Sarath.

There cannot be a poorer attempt in recent times to make a movie like this. Go spend your money on something useful than buying a ticket for this movie.
