Rajapakshe re-elected as Srilankan President [Wednesday, January 27, 2010]
The former Srilankan President Mahendra Rajapakshe was re-elected as the President of Srilanka on wednesday. Rajapakshe obtained a total of 6,015,934 votes which was 57.88 percent of the total votes polled. His main opponent was Sarath Fonseka who won 40.15 % of the votes. The relelected president Rajapakshe called the Srilankan citizens to jointly work to rebuild the nation that is torn by war. Mr Rajapakshe also ensured that he would work for the whole nation despite the fact that people voted for him or not. However, General Fonseka did not accept the election results. He alleged that Mr Rajapakshe had garnered the votes by manipulation. "The results in all these districts have been manipulated by the Rajapaksa Government. They want to rig the popular will of the people. I appeal to the foreign missions based in Colombo to take note of the serious electoral malpractices and intervene even at this late stage," , said he to a national news paper.
