First Nuclear Powered Ship sets sail  [Sunday, July 26, 2009]
   
 

                               Prime Minister Manmohan Singh inaugurated the first ever nuclear powered submarine at the Ship Building Centre in Vishakapattanam. The ship, which is christened as INS Arihant is the first nuclear power ship of the country and the prime minister said that the ship and all the related facilities would be used to ensure peace in the country and outside. The 5000 tonne submarine was undertaken as a secrect project and the related works continued for a period of 11 years. Nuclear Submarines are powered by nuclear reactors that generate huge quantities of heat which drives the engine.
