Madras Week celebrations to start on September 1st [Saturday, August 15, 2009]
The Madras Week Celebrations will get started on September 1st to commemorate the founding of the city on August 22nd. The prime objective of the celebrations according to historian S Muthiah is to spread awareness on the heritage of the city to all. Around 70 schools and 12 colleges will take part in the event. Several government departments including Archaeological Survey of India and Government Museum, would also host events. The Russian Cultural Centre and the Alliance Francaise will also join the celebrations. One of the highlights of the events would be a reading session on ‘Madras Madrigals,’ a compilation of interesting verses on the city from the book that is out of print, said S Suresh, Convenor of Intach.
