China unveils the world's fastest computer [Saturday, October 31, 2009]
The National University of Defence Technology (NUDT) of China on thursday unveiled its fastest super computer which could successfully compete with the fastest computing devices in the world. The new super computer christined as Tianhe can do more than 1 quadrillion calculations per second. A main stream dual core pesonal computer may take around 160 years to calculate. Zhang Yulin, the president of the project said that the computer was a 155 tonne system with 103 refrigerator like compartments which cover an area of 1000 square meters. The computer will be used for oil exploration, bio medical computing and for designing aero space vehicles.
