Centre decides to de-recognize deemed universities [Friday, January 22, 2010]
The functioning of the deemed universities in the state has hit a hard rock with the centre's decision to de recognize them. In response to the decision, the heads of deemed universities have sought review of the Tandon commitee report which is placed before the Supreme Court. The deemed university heads alleged that while the UGC Commitee made the report after visting the institution with team of specialists, the Tandon panel did the same only based on the presentations made by the universities. “It is unfair to rely only on the short presentations and suggest derecognition without giving weightage to the UGC committee reports or another chance to correct our problems,” said Mr Padmanabhan, the Vice Chancellor of Dr M G R University. The heads of the deemed universities claimed that the founders of the same did not interfere in planning the curriculum of the institutions and that the drastic step taken by the centre would affect the numerous students within these universities. However they also said that they would choose to appeal the Chief Minister, Prime Minister and the Minister for Human Resources Development to finf a feasible solution to the problem.
