The Tamil Nadu government went by the republic day by announcing the bravery awards for the citizens. After the unfurling of the flag by the governor, Surjit Singh Barnala, the Chief Minister presented the awards. M Suganthi of Nagapattinam district was awarded the Anna Medal for Gallantry. Four officials from the police department was given the Gandhi Adigal police medals for works relating to curbing of illicit liquor. The ceremony was also marked by the performance from the school students and by traditional and cultural programmes. Various government departments also actively participated in the republic day celebrations.
